Song of the Day: Lucy Dacus – La Vie En Rose

It was a pretty good year in 2018 for Lucy Dacus having scored a critically acclaimed album with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers and their band Boygenius, but 2019 may be shaping up to be even more interesting. The song “La Vie En Rose” is the first in her series of songs that will celebrate holidays. This one, Valentine’s Day.
The song that Dacus herself has called the perfect song and the tune that was made famous by Edith Piaf is having a bit of a renaissance of late having also been featured by Lady Ga Ga in A Star Is Born.

Song of the Day: J.S. Ondara – Torch Song
We have a sneaking suspicion that with the release of his debut album Tales of America on February 15th that J.S. Ondara just might be the next Leon Bridges. The Kenyan native settled in Minneapolis in 2013 without knowing much English and with limited guitar skills set about honing his songwriting skills. The somewhat haunting vocals come across sweet and melancholy. The sparse arrangement presented here are pretty much perfect for the song. The bandwagon is starting to get full. Jump in while there is still time.
Song of the Day: Mercury Rev (feat. Lucinda Williams) – Ode To Billie Joe
On February 8th Mercury Rev will release The Delta Sweete Revisited a song for song tribute to Bobbie Gentry’s 1968 release. Each song will feature a different female singer to include Hope Sandoval, Margo Price and Susanne Sundfor. Of course, you can’t release a Bobbie Gentry tribute record without including the iconic “Ode To Billie Joe.” The version that ends the record here is a brooding atmospheric beauty with Lucinda Williams playing the lead role.
Song of the Day: Jenny Lewis – Red Bull and Hennessy
Big fans of Jenny Lewis, the new record On The Line is set to come out on March 22nd. The album features appearances from a star studded cast and frequent Lewis collaborators Beck, Ringo Starr, Benmont Tench, and Ryan Adams.
Song of the Day: The Sheepdogs – Saturday Night
One of the best 70’s sounding Rock bands in the game today. The Sheepdogs play Rock and Roll like it is meant to be heard. “Saturday Night” is from their 2018 record Changing Colours.
Song of the Day: Frances Cone – Failure
Yet another top-notch Indie Band from Nashville, this time by way of Brooklyn. Frances Cone is Christina Cone and her partner Andrew Doherty. Think of them as sort of a latter day Eurythmics. Or, what Stevie Nicks fronting Best Coast would sound like.
Song of the Day: Pedro The Lion – Powerful Taboo
Pedro The Lion is back after a lengthy absence and are sounding better than ever. This one is from their latest record Phoenix, the first in a series of albums that will be thematically linked to a place where members of the band have lived. First out of the box, Phoenix, Arizona.
Song of the Day: Nick Waterhouse – Song For Winners
The new record comes out in March, but if this little delight of vintage sounding psychedelic soul is any indication we are in for a groovy treat.
Song of the Day: Robert Ellis – Nobody Smokes Anymore
Reinventing himself once again, Robert Ellis vibes his inner Elton John and Harry Nilsson on his soon to be released record, Texas Piano Man.
