First of all, dissociate your brain from any preconceived notion about what this band should sound like given the funky cartoon band sounding name of the group. You would be wrong. These guys are cool. The vibe is sort of The Replacements mixed with Elvis Costello, pretty cool actually.
He latest record, Plays Well With Others, is a subtle and often brilliant effort. As the album title would indicate the record includes collaborations with John Paul White, Rodney Crowell, Shovels & Rope, Nicole Atkins, and more. This is a grower of a record in the best of senses.
If you have a chance, make sure you catch Marty Stuart touring with Chris Hillman and Roger McGuinn of the Byrds playing the iconic album Sweetheart of the Rodeo from front to back. This song is from last Years highly excellent record, Way Out West.
Tilt and Shine, the latest album by Kevin Gordon is a storytellers paradise. With his songs covered by the likes of Irma Thomas, Southside Johnny and Levon Helm, this one just might put him on the map.
The Cowboy Junkies are back and yes, better than ever. The new record, All That Reckoning, is dark in places, dense in others, and always brilliant. This one ranks among there best.
This band sounds like the CD and digital era never existed and record companies ruled the music universe. Their new record, the eclectically named Rompous Pompous, is not out yet, but it is destined to be a doozy. In the meantime, here is something from a few years back. Glam on my friends.
This hard Rocking three piece makes no apologies for being retro rockers. Whether it early Guns ‘N’ Roses, mid-era AC/DC or any vintage of Led Zeppelin these guys ride the hot tub time machine all the way back to the early 70’s.
If you are wondering what happened to Foxy Shazam, after their break though album, The Church of Rock & Roll, they broke with their major label and were on a forced hiatus and eventually disbanded in 2014. RIP Foxy Shazam, come back soon.
See the message from the band on their web site October, 2014:
After more than ten years of our lives completely revolving around Foxy Shazam, it is time to disband for an unknown amount of time. Performing more than two thousand shows together around the world has been life changing, but also has kept us from spending time with our families and pursuing our own passions and ways to grow individually as artists. It has been an honor sharing ourselves and our music with all of you. Thank you to all of our fans, family, and friends that have supported us through everything to make this previous decade the best times of our lives. We truly believe there is a future for Foxy Shazam, that our best art is yet to come. We don’t know how long this will take but we plan on someday returning more powerful than ever.
