Five Cool Ones – Five New Records Released This Week (September 27, 2024)

With just a few blockbusters set for release later in the year, there are still a few diamonds to be mined this week.

Dutch masters DeWolff are back with their ‘70s style organ-drenched rock with “In Love.”

The semi-stripped-down reincarnation of Dawes is prepping for an album later in the year.

And, The Darkness, one of the best new bands to come out in the last 10 years, is out with another Queen-inspired operatic wonder.

But fear not, there’s more. Here are five more pieces of dust in the wind to savor this week.

Nick Lowe – Indoor Safari

Nick Lowe along with his cronies in Los Straitjackets with Indoor Safari have crafted what is sure to be one of the cooler albums of the year. Starting with the opener “Went To A Party” the Tiki-surf noir is dialed up to 11. “Crying Inside” comes across like a long-lost Roy Orbison tune, and “Lay Ot On Me” is classic vintage Nick Lowe.

Never straying far from his sweet spot, this one sounds classically vintage and contemporary at the same time.

Sam Millar – Virtual Summer

A bit late for the peak-summer beach vibing, Virtual Summer is hands down the best summer anthem meets power ballad record of the year.

Millar himself has said that releasing these gems now will give the listener something to hold on to when winter sets in allowing them to create their own virtual summer.

Bon Jovi-adjacent highlights abound including the 80’s stolen jam “Chardonnay” and the Duran Duran vibing “Deja Vue.”

This one stands on its own merit as the best back-to-the-future record of the year.

Billy Strings – Highway Prayers

Billy Strings is quickly morphing himself into the best live performer, in any genre, on the planet. Somehow finding the time to release a proper long-player right in the middle of his hectic tour schedule.

On this one, Strings has somehow managed to channel the Americana magic of Stapelton and Sturgill while maintaining his unflinching bluegrass ethos.

A bit on the longer side, this one weighs in at about one hour and 15 minutes, the 20 original songs represented here are a great way to experience the pure musicianship of one of the best virtuosos to come around in the last several decades.

JD McPherson – Night Owls

JD McPherson is front and center with his Duane Eddy stylings on his first proper non holiday album since 2017’s Undivided Heart and Soul.

With one foot in the Rockabilly ethos and the other in vintage ‘60s surf guitar McPherson has created a deliciously eclectic wonderment of a record.

The title track carries a Cars Mantra, and the instrumental “The Phantom Lover Of New Rochelle” is an aggressive surf guitar throwback.

This one is a brilliant return for a sorely missed artist.

Pale Waves – Smitten

Buoyant exuberance, anthemic propulsion, and layered production are the touchstones of this excellent record from the Manchester-based band Pale Waves.

Led by the effervescent Heather Baron-Gracie, the band sashays their way through a solid set of arena-ready misses that bring to the minds ear The Corrs by way of Stevie Nicks.

The closer “Slow” is a slow-burn stunner from a band that seems to be reaching the peak of their powers.

What We’re Listening To ( July 27, 2024)

There are lot of cool sounds coming from the offices of Rock is the New Roll H..Q. Featured this week.

Kishi Bashi – Make Believe

A great summer song that should cure what ails you. Featuring Linqua Franqua adding some hip hop swagger to a dance fever special.

Quivers – Oyster Cuts

With melodies that harken back to Galaxie 500 and The Pretenders, Quivers latest, is a refreshing throwback.

Thee Heart Tones – Need Something More

Coming from the El Michels Affair, from the studio that brought you Charles Bradley, fresh-faced just out of high school , Thee Heart Tones delivers on a bed of low rider soul.

Nick Lowe – Went To A Party

His latest with his side-piece band Los Straitjackets, Nick lowe is as a member of the rat pack on this opener to his first proper record in some time, Indoor Safari.

Shooter Jennings and the Werewolves of LA. – Desperados Under The Eaves

The closing track from the Shooter Jennings tribute show for Warren Zevon. Come for the sparkling rendition of “Carmelita” from this set, but stay for the son of Waylon’s epic take on the Zevon deep track.

What We’re Listening To (May 10, 2020)

Datura4

In the blink of an ear, these guys from Western Australia have transformed themselves from an on-fire Blues-Boogie band to one of the best Psychedelic Rock bands on the planet.

Their earlier albums including Blessed is the Boogie were pretty much straight-ahead Blues Rock affairs with occasional mid-song jams to display their immense musical chops. Now, with their latest release, West Coast Highway Cosmic, the band has turned the Psychedelic Rock up to 11, so much so that they would make the 13th-floor elevators blush. The album steps on the gas and stretches out the jams on the “Highway Star ” influenced title track, turns up the Steppenwolf vibes on “Wolfman Woogie,” and meanders its way through the desert-noir of “You’re The Only One”

Grace Potter Monday Night Twilight Hour

Grace Potter is using her quarantine time wisely by putting together a weekly YouTube video series to share music with her fans. Typically, it is just her and her piano, but here, she enlists help from her band on an excellent version of the Zeppelin classic “Whole Lotta Love.”

Margo Price – Twinkle Twinkle

By all rights, we should be listening to, That’s How Rumors Get Started, the new record from Margo Price that was supposed to come out this past Friday. But, it is Corona delayed, so we get the next best thing, a song, and accompanying video to wet the whistle until we are able to hear the entire thing in all its glory.

Ray Wylie Hubbard – Outlaw Blood

The mighty Texas Troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard has a new album in the can and it is almost ready to hit the streets. The record features a dazzling array of guests including, Ringo Starr, Don Was, Chris Robinson, The Cadillac Three, Joe Walsh, Pam Tillis, Paula Nelson, Elizabeth Cook, Tyler Bryant, Ashley McBryde, Larkin Poe, Peter Rowan, and Ronnie Dunn. Just to name them all.

Paul Weller – Nick Lowe

Both of these blokes have a record coming out later in the year and to say we are looking forward to it is a bit like saying we are looking forward to happy hour.

Nick Lowe does a particularly excellent imitation of the cool uncle and elder statesman as he as grown into over the last several albums with “Lay It On Me Baby.”

Albert King – Funky London

A little blues 12-bar workout from Albert Kings’ Funky London. The title track and the instrumental cover of JB’s “Cold Sweat” are worth the price of admission alone on this one.

Elton John – Tonight (Live From Moscow ’79)

For our ears, the Elton John w/Ray Cooper 1979 live album has passed over 17-11-70, or 11-17-70 if your on this side of the pond, as the best live record in the Elton John canon. Side one is just Elton and his piano where he tickles the ivories like his life depended on it, especially so on his scorching rendition of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.” And, things get even cooler when percussionist Ray Copper joins Elton on stage kicking things off with “Funeral For A Friend” followed by the best version you will ever hear of “Tonight.”

Rocking With The New Roll: April 12, 2019

This new feature, Rock With The New Roll, will be a somewhat random, usually spontaneous series of musings on the week in music. Some new, some old, this will be designed to highlight what is capturing our ear-tention.

Winetka Bowling League – Slow Dances

This Los Angeles band with firmly entrenched New York roots delivers music that has hooks for days. Much of their new music was written during a drive back to new york where the California vibe was ultra present all the way to the East Coast.

The song “On the 5” with the line “I want to go back to that summer in San Fran, listening to nothing but Revolver and Pet Sounds,” says all you need to know about this excellent band.

Nick Lowe – Trombone

This new song from Nick Lowe features Lowe’s recent collaborators Los Straightjackets as his backing band and Duane Benjamin on Trombone. The song addresses the handling of the feeling of abandonment after a lost love.

The Magpie Salute – The Killing Moon

Skip the Record Store Day lines and enjoy this first listen of the Magpie Salute’s tribute to Echo and the Bunnymen with their version of “The Killing Moon”

Walker Lukens – Didn’t Wanna Do Right

The latest single to be released in support of his upcoming record, “Didn’t Wanna Do Right” is a spectacular, pristinely produced song that is next-level great from this rising star.

Hayden Thorpe – Love Crimes

With the relatively recent of his band Wild Beasts, Hayden Thorpe is making great use of his time as a gets ready to release his first solo record to be released in the next couple of months.
